What did ya’ll learn about last week?
As we begin this morning - Let me ask you a question - “What do you “wish” for?”
Matthew 16:24–28 (NASB95)
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
25 “For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it.
26 “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
27 “For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and will then repay every man according to his deeds.
28 “Truly I say to you, there are some of those who are standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”
“wish” - (thelo) - verb, present. active, indicative, third person, singular - finite verb - wish; want
Sense: to desire - to feel or have a desire for; want strongly
“after” - (opiso) - preposition - improper preposition - after; behind; back
Sense: to follow (behavior) - to behave in accordance or in agreement with
Matthew 4:19 NASB95
19 And He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Mark 1:17 NASB95
17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
Mark 1:20 NASB95
20 Immediately He called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went away to follow Him.
1 Timothy 5:15 NASB95
15 for some have already turned aside to follow Satan.
“deny” - (aparneomai) - verb, aorist, middle, imperative, third person, singular - finite verb - deny
Sense: to deny (acknowledge) - to refuse to recognize or acknowledge

Finally, aparneomai can denote a positive form of denial. Jesus exhorts all disciples to deny themselves, take up their cross daily, and follow Christ (Mt 16:24; Mk 8:34). This is a call to selfless, total commitment to the Lord. In a real sense, we face a double choice: to choose to put our own interests and ourselves first and thus deny the Lord Jesus, or else to deny ourselves and in place of that to choose to live for God.

“take up” - (airo) - verb, aorist, active, imperative, third person, singular - finite verb - take away; take up; pick up
Sense: to lift up - to take and lift upward
“cross” - (stauros) - noun, accusative, singular, masculine - direct object of the dependent clause - cross
Sense: cross (instrument) - a wooden structure consisting of an upright post with a transverse piece onto which individuals wrists and feet were nailed as a form of execution.

(3) Finally, the NT applies stauros metaphorically to all followers of Christ. Jesus declares in the gospels that the way of Christ, the way of the “cross,” is also the way for all Christians as we take up our cross and follow him (Mt 10:38; Lk 9:23; 14:27). These sayings of Jesus implore Christians to bear the cost of Christian discipleship and be willing to sacrifice ourselves in service to him and to others. This message is as pertinent to us today as it was to the disciples in Jesus’ day. We too have a “cross” to bear in our faithful and obedient life and witness

“follow” - (akoloutheo) - verb, present, active, imperative, third person, singular - finite verb - follow; go after; obey
Sense: to follow (behavior) - to behave in accordance or in agreement with.
